COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTING

Throughout the year college admission tests are administered to college bound students. It is important that students become familiar with these tests. Information regarding evening test preparation courses will be made available from the Guidance Office. Computer assisted instruction is also available on the web by visiting the SAT website, www.collegeboard.com , and the ACT website, www.act.org. See your counselor for information relating to any of these testing programs.
PSAT/NMSQT – The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarships Qualifying Test
Duration - approximately 3 ½ hours; given on Saturday in mid-October
Taken by - high school juniors (available to interested sophomores)
Given by - College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
Frequency - one time per year (October)
Purpose - measure educational development in five areas and establishes eligibility for certain scholarships.
ACT – The American College Testing Program
Duration - 4 hours
Taken by - high school juniors and seniors
Given by - ACT
Frequency - six times per year (Saturdays – usually offered in September, October, December, February, April, June)
Purpose - test English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning (check information from specific colleges to see if these tests are acceptable in place of, or in addition to, the SAT).
SAT – The Scholastic Aptitude Testing: part of the College Admissions Testing Program(ATP)
Duration - approximately 4 ½ hours
Taken by - high school juniors and seniors
Given by - College Board
Frequency - seven times per year (Saturdays – usually offered in October, November, December, January, March, May, June).
Purpose - used by most colleges for admissions purposes.
SAT II – The Achievement Test (SAT II)
Duration - 2 hour per test (maximum of three per testing date)
Taken by - seniors whose colleges require subject tests
Given by- College Board
Frequency- six times per year (Saturdays – usually offered in October, November, December, January, March, May, June)
Purpose - required by some colleges as an additional indicator of achievement in specific areas (check individual college for information).
*AP Tests – Subject area tests
Duration- 3 to 4 hours
Taken by - students enrolled in AP courses.
Given by- College Board
Frequency - one time per year, in May.
Purpose- may fulfill college credit requirements -information available in the guidance office.
